How Much Local History Do You Know?

Chino’s history begins in the Mexican era when Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado granted Rancho Santa Ana del Chino to Antonio Maria Lugo. His son-in-law Isaac Williams later took charge of the rancho, raising large quantities of horses and cattle that attracted both Native American raiders and unscrupulous characters. During the Mexican-American War, the Battle of Chino took place at Williams’ rancho, and the Mormon Battalion later worked the agricultural harvest and built a grist mill there.

The rancho became a popular stopover during the California Gold Rush, and coal was discovered on the property. Williams’ claim was officially patented in 1869, and Richard Gird became the next owner, subdividing the land beginning in 1887 to create the Town of Chino, which incorporated as a city in 1910.

The Chino Valley’s fertile soil, reaching depths of four feet, made it an agricultural powerhouse from the 1890s through the mid-20th century. Sugar beets dominated the early economy, followed by sweet corn marketed throughout the Pacific coast, along with peaches, walnuts, tomatoes, and strawberries. The dairy industry flourished from the 1950s through the 1980s, with many ethnic Dutch families establishing highly efficient operations that made Chino the largest milk-producing community in California.

The city’s pastoral setting also attracted Hollywood film crews seeking “Midwestern” backdrops for movies and television shows. In the 1970s, Chino transformed into a suburban city while retaining its agricultural character, and today it balances residential development with its rich farming heritage.
