If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take, using the Pomona Public Library as a starting point:
Take Mission Blvd east, then turn left onto Towne Ave. Turn right onto San Bernardino Ave. Turn right again onto Indian Hill Blvd. We’re in the same parking lot as the Aldi and Family Dollar, at 1640 Indian Hill Blvd.
Stay on Misison Blvd a while longer, then turn left onto East End Ave. Turn right onto Holt Ave, then left onto Indian Hill Blvd. Watch for us coming up on the right a couple buildings after the Mix Bowl Cafe.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Pomona, California, is named after the ancient Roman goddess of fruit — a fitting tribute to a city that would become a hub of citrus farming. The name was chosen in 1875 by horticulturist Solomon Gates, even before any fruit trees had been planted. The area’s earliest settlers were Ricardo Véjar and Ygnacio Palomares, who arrived in the 1830s when California was still part of Mexico.
After California became part of the United States in 1848, the region saw an influx of Anglo-American settlers. A significant figure during this time was Louis Phillips, a Prussian immigrant who purchased 12,000 acres in 1864 and became one of Los Angeles County’s wealthiest men. His contributions to the area included the Phillips Block in downtown Los Angeles and the Phillips Mansion in what became the nearby town of Spadra.
Spadra, founded by William Rubottom in 1866, was an early settlement west of Pomona that flourished briefly as a stagecoach stop and railroad terminus. It featured stores, a school, and the Spadra Hotel, but it began to decline after the railroad extended eastward. By 1964, Spadra was annexed into Pomona, with only the Phillips Mansion and Spadra Cemetery remaining as historical landmarks.
Pomona’s transformation gained momentum in the 1880s with the arrival of Coachella Valley water and expanded rail connections, fueling its rise as a key citrus-growing center. Officially incorporated in 1888, the city earned the nickname “Queen of the Citrus Belt” in the 1920s, boasting one of the highest per-capita incomes in the country. Pomona later became a popular site for movie previews and developed a rich religious landscape, now home to over 120 churches showcasing diverse architectural styles.
