A Brief History of Montclair
Long before Montclair became the bustling city it is today, the area was home to the Serrano people, who established a village along a creek lined with sycamore trees. In 1774, Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza passed through the region on his journey to the San Gabriel Mission and named the waterway Arroyo de los Alisos, or stream of the sycamores. For more than a century, the land served mainly as grazing pasture and a watering stop for travelers.
Development began in earnest in 1897, when a local landowner founded the Township of Marquette, the area’s first modern settlement. A few years later, developer Emil Firth purchased a large tract of land and renamed it Monte Vista, subdividing it into parcels intended for citrus orchards and family homes. Throughout the early twentieth century, Monte Vista thrived as a citrus-growing community, with groves stretching across much of what is now Montclair.
Following World War II, a housing boom transformed the area into a growing residential community, and in 1956 it incorporated as the City of Monte Vista. Two years later, in 1958, residents voted to rename the city Montclair after confusion arose with another Monte Vista in Northern California. In the decades that followed, Montclair grew into a regional hub for shopping and transportation, anchored by the opening of Montclair Plaza in 1968.
