A Brief History of Ontario

Ontario’s story began in 1881, when Canadian engineer George Chaffey looked out over the dry Cucamonga Desert and saw a future of thriving farms. He and his brother William bought more than 6,000 acres along with valuable water rights. They named their new settlement after their home province of Ontario, Canada.

The Chaffeys planned a “Model Colony” that balanced farming with the comforts of town life. Land buyers automatically received shares in the water company, and miles of cement pipe carried water from San Antonio Canyon to every lot. At the center of it all was Euclid Avenue, a grand double boulevard with a grassy, pepper tree-lined parkway down the middle. Starting in 1887, a mule-drawn streetcar traveled up Euclid, and the mules famously rode back downhill on a platform behind the car.

The city was incorporated in 1891 and grew into a center for citrus and olives. Ontario also played a surprising role in American home life. In the early 1900s, local power company employee Earl Richardson developed a lightweight electric iron with extra heat at its tip. His “Hotpoint” iron became a national bestseller, and the Hotpoint name is still on household appliances today.

Throughout the 20th century, Ontario grew into a hub for transportation and commerce, anchored by Ontario International Airport and its spot where major freeways meet. In 2005, a historic stretch of Euclid Avenue was added to the National Register of Historic Places, preserving the heart of Chaffey’s original vision. Today, Ontario is home to more than 185,000 residents.

Living and Working in Ontario

Ontario offers a welcoming blend of small-town history and big-city opportunity. As one of the largest cities in San Bernardino County, it has a strong economy built on logistics, retail, hospitality, and the steady traffic of Ontario International Airport. Families enjoy well-kept parks, community events in Ontario Town Square, and quick access to both the San Gabriel Mountains and Los Angeles. Local school districts, nearby Chaffey College, and the many colleges across the Inland Empire give residents plenty of educational options. New developments also keep bringing fresh dining, shopping, and recreation to the area.
